Our art blocks have been made with tiles mounted onto wooden panels. We make each tile from scratch. Slabs of clay are rolled out using a slab roller, a slab roller is like a big rolling pin, it helps to roll out slabs of the same thickness.

The next step is to cut out the tiles to the right size.  The soft tiles are left to harden and dry between sheets of porous cement boards, the moisture is absorbed by the boards, keeping the tiles nicely flat.  After a few days the tiles are removed, and their edges are smoothed with a wet sponge.

The next step is to bake the air dry tiles in an electric kiln, which is like a big oven, but designed to bake items made with clay. The tiles are bisque fired and then glaze. Sandra then gives the tiles an aged look to create depth to the tile. This antiquing process is quite time consuming but it gives the tile such a lovely weathered look. Next, glazes are brushed onto the tile, once complete the the glazed tiles are then placed in the kiln for the second firing. They bake for another 8-10 hours.

The next step is to transfer the image to the tile. Sandra's photographs are printed using ceramic inks, the printed image is then transferred onto the glazed surface of the tile. The tile is then fired for a third time, the glaze melts enough to adsorb the ink from the image.

The end result is a permanently fused photograph to the ceramic tile, which can be treasured for a lifetime and beyond. Each one of one the tiles is glazed by hand, each one different from the other, little porcelain wall art collectables that can be individually hung or grouped together.  By one or collect them all...
